Go Green and save

We want WWF's Earth Hour to be biggest climate change event ever

David Nussbaum
DELIGHTED: WWF Chief Executive David Nussbaum's backing Earth Hour

WE want WWF’s Earth Hour to be the biggest global event on climate change ever. To do this we are encouraging everyone to get involved from individuals, communities, schools to businesses.

We are delighted to be working with the News of the World.

This campaign is a fantastic opportunity to reach the British people and inspire them to take positive action on climate change.

News of the World readers could play a big part in making WWF’s Earth Hour a massive success in the UK and sending a strong signal to the Government that they care about climate change.

The initiative has already won broad support from big business including Coca-Cola and IKEA to the WI and the Girl Guides.

It is backed by high profile people such as Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Cate Blanchett and Boris Johnson.

Businesses and local authorities in 375 cities across 74 countries have already committed to take part including London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Beijing, Rome and Moscow.

Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Hong Kong, Dubai, Singapore, Athens, Buenos Aires, Toronto, Sydney, Mexico City, Las Vegas,Cape Town and Helsinki.

Action

Earth Hour will also see the lights go out on some of the most recognised landmarks on the planet, such as Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Table Mountain in Cape Town, Merlion in Singapore, Sydney Opera House, CN Tower in Toronto, Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the world’s tallest constructed building Taipei 101.

But Earth Hour is not about sitting in the dark for an hour worrying over the horrors of climate change but having a candlelit dinner with friends or family or organising a lights out event at your local pub, whilst knowing you are making a difference.

By switching off our lights for one hour on Saturday March 28th we will be sending a strong signal to governments around the world that we want greater action on climate change.

When world leaders meet in Copenhagen later this year to discuss targets to cut emissions we want them to look back and remember Earth Hour and that everyone is relying on them to do what is right.

The impacts of climate change could be devastating to people and animals around the world but it is not too late to prevent the worst of them if we act now. Earth Hour is a great opportunity to show governments that they have public backing to protect the planet for future generations to come.

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Mystery Of The Easter Chipmunk

Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Mystery Of The Easter Chipmunk

Ruby-Spears Productions/DIC Entertainment (1984, 1989, 1995), Paramount (February 10, 2009), single disc, 66 mins plus supplements, 1.33:1 fullscreen, Dolby Digital 2.0, Unrated, Retail: $16.99

Storyboard:

Lent has finally arrived, and Easter is right around the corner. Stores have already stocked up on chocolate-covered Easter eggs. This also means that Easter-themed DVDs have started to show up in the marketplace. The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk was originally a Direct-to-Video release back in 1995. Now it has been reissued on DVD just in time for a new-found interest in Alvin and his chipmunk brothers. In this DVD, the Chipmunks participate in one Easter-related adventure, and four others from the 80s TV show.

The Sweatbox Review:

There’s been a lot of renewed interested in Alvin and the Chipmunks, ever since their film came out two years ago in 2007 and became a blockbuster. Paramount, which owns the rights to the show on home video, has been furiously releasing DVD after DVD of their many specials and cartoon episodes. There hasn’t been a full season release yet (8 seasons were produced) and I’m actually surprised to hear that no update on the show has been proposed publicly. Still, it is easy to say that after fifty years since the characters were created for a musical act by the late Ross Bagdasarian, Sr., they are still a relevant part of our cultural identity. After a brief animated series that premiered in 1961, the show was revived two decades later by his son Ross Bagdasarian, Jr.

In 1983, Ruby-Spears Productions updated the musical trio for a new show that would air on NBC. The show starred Alvin and his two brothers, Simon and Theodore, living in the human world with their adult guardian, Dave Seville. The show tackled everyday children’s issues and many of the pressures of being under the spotlight. What ultimately made the show connect with audiences were its three leads which were instantly identifiable to kids around the world. Alvin plays the popular leader who craves the spotlight. Simon is the intellectual brother who is knowledgeable about everything. Finally, there was Theodore who is the more innocent and caring brother. To make the show appeal to young girls, the producers also added The Chipettes, which were female versions of Alvin and Co. The show became a hit with children and was even made into an animated feature film in 1987 with The Chipmunk Adventure. On this release we get four episodes from the show, along with a DTV episode originally released in 1995.

The first episode on this disc is the title episode, The Mystery of the Easter Chipmunk. In this full episode (22 minutes), the Chipmunks meet the real Easter Bunny, Mr. Hoppity. After a brief remark by their grandfather, they begin to think that he might’ve been the original Easter Bunny. Alvin, curious about the implications this has on his family legacy, investigates by interrogating the Easter Bunny’s aunt. She confirms that the Easter Bunny was not the first animal to distribute Easter baskets. Alvin assumes she means the original was his uncle and he exposes this idea to the media, blaming the Easter Bunny for decades of deception. Alvin and his brothers then investigate the matter further, eventually invading the Bunny’s Easter Egg factory. The story culminates in court where Alvin places the Easter Bunny on trial. Overall, this is an average Alvin and the Chipmunks short. I felt that some of the more charming aspects from the television show were missing and this was very much an Alvin episode. We barely got to see the other characters and Alvin came out a bit obsessed. It is not my favorite episode of the show, but I could see kids buying into the Easter spirit.

The second episode is from the second season of the show which aired in 1984, called Snow Wrong. In this episode, a theater is having rehearsals for the parts in a production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Chipmunks and the Chipettes all audition for different parts, but it is Brittany that has an eye out for the title role of Snow White. Eventually, she proves she is the best candidate for the role, but the director’s daughter steals the part away from her. Eventually, the situation is reversed, but the daughter does everything possible to keep Brittany from shining in her new role. All of this, only minutes away from show time. This was a cute episode and it establishes Brittany’s character well in place for future seasons. This demonstrates the natural progression of the show when in the later seasons we would see episodes dedicated entirely to the Chipettes.

The third episode is called Special Kind of Champ and it first aired in 1989 for season six of the show. In this episode, Alvin gets in trouble with his gym teacher when he does not try to do his best at track and field. Alvin explains to him that because of his short legs he feels he is incapable of doing well and would rather not try at all. His coach then gives him an ultimatum that in order to pass gym he must train another athlete to be in the Olympics. What Alvin does not know, and later finds out, is that he is going to train a handicapped child to participate in the Special Olympics. At first, Alvin is reluctant, but the kid’s determination and spirit inspires him to do his best and they eventually support one another. In the process, Alvin learns that winning is not everything and that he should also play sports because of how they make him feel. This is a cute episode with a good message. This is certainly one of those episodes where Alvin does seem to learn a lesson from others and it ultimately is a good lesson for kids to learn.

easterchipmunk6

The fourth episode is called Thinking Cap Trap which aired in the show’s seventh season towards the end of 1989. In this episode, Simon is constantly interrupted by his family members when he is watching his favorite quiz show. Simon gets frustrated that his family is not smart enough to participate on the show as a family. They all seem to rely on his brains to do things in life. Eventually, Simon is fed up and invents a machine that is supposed to charge their brains into being smart. The machine, worn as a cap on their head, works so well that Simon signs the family up for the quiz show. However, on the day of the show, the effects of the cap have worn off and Simon is embarrassed when his family cannot answer basic trivia questions. In the end of the show, Simon even has to rely solely on his family to answer the questions that can win the show. This is my favorite episode on this disc and I like the message at the end of the show. Ultimately, Simon learns that each member of his family is special and knowledgeable about different things.

easterchipmunk7

The last episode on the disc is also from the show’s sixth season and it is called Luck O’ The Chipmunks and it first aired in 1989. In this episode, the Chipmunks are in class when they are introduced to a new student, Mickey O’Dell. Mickey is apparently from Ireland (despite his terrible accent) and loves magic. However, when his tricks do not work, he becomes shunned by the other kids in class. Theodore, however, always with his sensitive heart becomes friends with Mickey who desperately wants to keep him around. In order to impress Theodore, he tells him that he has a leprechaun that appears only to him at his house. Theodore is intrigued and brings his brothers to Mickey’s house to see him. Alvin and Simon both request wishes from the leprechaun. Mickey, desperate to cover his own tracks, decides that he will grant them their wishes and the plot escalates to the rest of the school. Eventually, Mickey has to come out and explain everything to his friends, but not before some amusing close calls. This is my least favorite episode on the disc. It barely focuses on The Chipmunks and the leprechaun plot was just not my favorite. I felt sorry for Mickey, but I felt no need for him to make up this elaborate plot about a leprechaun. Also, I could’ve used a better voice characterization for the kid. This episode is a good example of how the show became towards the end of its run when writers started to run out of good ideas.

Well, it's another comic affair about two best friends en route to getting married - not to each other of course.

We have our two lead ladies who have been best friends from way back (like chuddi buddies), and things seem super cool when they both get engaged around the same time. Thankfully, this is not another flick about two girls wooing one guy, but about two girls who want just the perfect fairy tale wedding. Being best friends, always on the same wavelength, they seem to have the same idea as to how to get that done. All that's fine, or is it?

Trouble truly happens when both of them accidentally choose the same date and venue for their individual ceremonies! Neither of them is ready to give up on the chosen place and date, not even for the best friend of her life. Who wins? Obviously, it's one of those feel-good comic flicks, so you can rest assured that just before the credits come up, both the brides will be happily married just as they planned while also managing to remain best friends forever!

So, as the fairy tale adage goes. And so they lived happily ever after!

The movie is coming at a theatre near you quite soon, so if you love this feel-good genre, don't miss this treat!

More Tom and Jerry

More Tom And Jerry Tales, plus we need your Blu-ray help!
blu-captureRodney has jumped in with his latest review, a very enthusiastic one for the most recent collection of episodes from Tom And Jerry Tales Volume Six. I must admit to trying to catch the show as and when I can but haven’t seen too much of it. However I would certainly agree that I’ve been fairly impressed with the intention of recreating the classic cartoon feel of Hanna-Barbera’s 1940s originals and, as Rodney says, “that the characters look true to their original shapes and designs and have not been noticeably redesigned, keeping their basic characteristics”. Though there will be some that disregard these television efforts out of hand, there’s a real attempt at capturing the old charm, and this final collection finishes up Tom And Jerry Tales “with a great set of episodes that showcase some of the things the new show got right: a good update on an old classic”.

Now then, we’re in need of some of your technical expertise! Along with Blu-ray’s magnificent developments in picture, audio and supplemental technologies comes the troublesome downside of actually being able to pull any image captures from the discs with which we illustrate our reviews. We’ve posted a couple of reviews so far that went the old photographic route, aiming a digital camera at the display screen and hoping for the best. Like us, you’ll probably feel like it’s a solution, but one that doesn’t accurately represent the intentions of a transfer. Despite my trying to reach out to other sites that seem to be having no difficulty in presenting direct captures from hi-def titles, it seems it’s a little bit of a “top secret maneuver”…and a lot of digging around the web this week has yielded little in the way of a short and sweet solution.

I’m not terribly technically minded when it comes to these things, but anyone able to offer the right knowledge to help out Animated News & Views would be mucho appreciated (as for the basics, I’m using a BD drive built into my PC system). You can be assured that you’ll remain anonymous and that information will not be posted or leaked elsewhere - please contact me via direct email or through this thread in our AN&V Forums. I’m all for the rigorous copy prevention steps put in place by the BDA, but when it actually stops a genuine, officially recognized by the studios site from helping to promote content that they send us on the format, how the heck is that assisting Blu-ray’s chances?

Batman has earned himself a loyal fan following, but the demise of Heath Ledger who plays the menacing villain in The Dark Knight, has added many more to the audience, and not in vain. The movie is brilliantly made and in very many ways, it differs from earlier Batman movies which were typically 'from comics to celluloid'. Here we have a brooding and dark film, with both villain and hero taking on equally magnificent proportions, so that you often wonder if the bad guy will actually meet his just deserts.

The Dark Knight may lack the caped Robin, but in his stead we have two Batman sidekicks - District Attorney Harvey Dent and Police Lt. Jim Gordon. Together, they attempt to rid their city of organized crime in one fell swoop, only to discover that every good deed backfires, putting Gotham City in greater jeopardy. Batman's biggest foe is the Joker. Ironically, there is nothing funny about this sinister villain. With a tangled mane, harsh white makeup, darting mad eyes and an obscene tongue that keeps licking his painted-on smile, he strikes terror not just in his foes, but even in the mobsters who hire him to eliminate Gotham City's caped crusader. It's a stupendously creepy performance and Heath Ledger has outdone himself.

When you're fighting an enemy who plays by no rules, do you have to abandon your own moral code to vanquish him? This is the ethical dilemma that Batman faces in the movie. How do you kill a villain so vile and ruthless, without being so oneself? How do Batman and his two brave warriors wipe that menacing grin off the Joker's face? Catch the movie at a theatre near you to find out!

Review

Be warned. This film is not for everybody. Don't get us wrong, it's not in the least scary, but it's only for people with a supremely developed taste for Vampire vs. Werewolf gore, complete predictability of the thrills, and dismal lighting that keeps you squinting for most of the movie! The first Underworld instalment with Kate Beckinsale in the lead and her husband Len Wiseman doing the directing came across as a novel idea, and everyone loved it. But even Kate could not save the second part, and so she most vehemently refused to act in the third part, which is actually a prequel.

Not everything is awry about the movie, there is Michael Sheen for instance, who takes his Goth-monster duties as seriously as he does his stoic Presidential roles! Rendering a rather invigorating performance as the leader of the rebelling werewold camp, it is his sheer energy that moves the story bit by bit, with help from Bill Nighy, who leads the Vampires in the Underworld battler for power. Michael Sheen as Lucian does infuse a sense of fear with his popping eyes and brusque manner, not to mention his leathery guise and gnashing pointed teeth. Bill Nighy is not quite as dazzling in his performance as Michael, making his Vampire portrayal more amusing than terrifying, what with his mannerisms and accent.

Replacing Kate Beckinsale and taking the lady lead is Rhona Mitra, who is Viktor's [Bill Nighy] daughter and Lucian's lover. So obviously there's bound to be trickery in there somewhere right? And even though the camera loves Rhona, it's Michael Sheen who gets the lion's share of the cam's attention, and rightly so. He's the only one who has taken his guise seriously.

The story is quite simple. It is set in the dark ages, when these dark creatures existed. Only the Vampires were superior and the Werewolves served as their leashed slaves. Then one fine day, a werewolf [or should we say Lycan] called Lucian realizes that the Vampires used them to build their empire but do not pay them their due respect. Hence, begins the rebellion against the Vampires. Who wins? To find out, you just have to endure 92 minutes of Underworld 3, which is not so tough a task, if you like the genre.

Jennifer Aniston -Update

Jennifer Aniston weighed down

[March 5, 2009, 11:45:10 PM]

Jennifer Aniston is one hot mama, but only because she puts herself on a gruelling diet and exercise regime. And she insists on thus punishing herself because she is rock-sure that she won’t get good roles if she adds even an ounce! So she has to say "no" to junk food even though she absolutely loves it, because she loves her work more! "I'm a realist. I know that if I eat nothing but burgers and chips, I'm not going to be hired for the parts I normally would. That might be fine one day, but not right now," she says.

Drink water

DRINK WATER ON EMPTY STOMACH

It is popular in Japan today to drink water immediately after waking up every morning. Furthermore, scientific tests have proven its value. We publish below a description of use of water for our readers. For old and serious diseases as well as modern illnesses the water treatment had been found successful by a Japanese medical society as a 100% cure for the following diseases:
Headache, body ache, heart system, arthritis, fast heart beat, epilepsy, excess fatness, bronchitis asthma, TB, meningitis, kidney and urine diseases, vomiting, gastritis, diarrhea, piles, diabetes, constipation, all eye diseases, womb, cancer and menstrual disorders, ear nose and throat
diseases.
METHOD OF TREATMENT
1. As you wake up in the morning before brushing teeth, drink 4 x 160ml glasses of water
2. Brush and clean the mouth but do not eat or drink anything for 45 minute
3. After 45 minutes you may eat and drink as normal.
4. After 15 minutes of breakfast, lunch and dinner do not eat or drink anything for 2 hours
5. Those who are old or sick and are unable to drink 4 glasses of water at the beginning may commence by taking little water and gradually increase it to 4 glasses per day.
6. The above method of treatment will cure diseases of the sick and others can enjoy a healthy life.

The following list gives the number of days of treatment required to cure/control/reduce main diseases:
1.
High Blood Pressure (30 days)
2.
Gastric (10 days)
3.
Diabetes (30 days)
4.
Constipation (10 days)
5.
Cancer (180 days)
6.
TB (90 days)
7.
Arthritis patients should follow the above treatment only for 3 days in the 1st week, and from 2nd week onwards – daily.

This treatment method has no side effects, however at the commencement of treatment you may have to urinate a few times.
This makes sense ... The Chinese and Japanese drink hot tea with their meals ..not cold water. Maybe it is time we adopt their drinking habit while eating!!! Nothing to lose, everything to gain...
It is better if we continue this and make this procedure as a routine work in our life. Drink Water and Stay healthy and Active.

For those who like to drink cold water, this article is applicable to you.
It is nice to have a cup of cold drink after a meal.
However, the cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion.
Once this "sludge" reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine.
Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer. It is best to drink hot soup or warm water after a meal.

A serious note about heart attacks:
·
Women should know that not every heart attack symptom is going to be the left arm hurting,
·
Be aware of intense pain in the jaw line.
·
You may never have the first chest pain during the course of a heart attack.
·
Nausea and intense sweating are also common symptoms.
·
60% of people who have a heart attack while they are asleep do not wake up.
·
Pain in the jaw can wake you from a sound sleep. Let's be careful and be aware. The more we know, the better chance we could survive...

A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this mail sends it to everyone they know, you can be sure that we'll save at least one life.
